PRP: The Answer to Treating Your Sports Injury

Sports injuries can be frustrating—especially when they keep you from doing what you love. Whether you are a weekend warrior or a dedicated athlete, your body needs effective support to heal and bounce back.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that's changing the game in sports injury recovery. It's available here at the International Spine, Pain & Performance Center.
If you're dealing with a sports injury, read on to learn more about PRP and how it might be the answer you've been searching for.
What is PRP therapy?
PRP therapy has been used for four decades, although it's grown in popularity in the last 15 years. This therapy uses a PRP serum derived directly from your blood.
After a quick blood draw, we spin your sample in a centrifuge to separate the platelets—tiny cells packed with growth factors and healing proteins.
These concentrated platelets are injected into the injured area to help reduce inflammation, accelerate healing, and restore tissue.
How PRP therapy helps with sports injuries
Instead of masking symptoms, PRP works with your body to repair damaged tissue at the source. Unlike pain medications or steroids, PRP doesn't just temporarily relieve symptoms; it helps your body heal from the inside out.
Once activated at the site of your injury, PRP forms a clot that releases high concentrations of healing proteins—like PDGF, TGF-β, and HGF. These proteins support tissue repair by reducing inflammation, encouraging collagen production, and promoting the growth and migration of other cells needed for healing.
PRP helps treat several types of sports injuries.
Professional athletes — including those in the NFL, MLB, and PGA — have shared that they’ve used PRP therapy, but you don’t have to be a pro to benefit from it.PRP is a safe, natural way to support healing in injuries like:
- Tendonitis and tendinosis (like tennis elbow or jumper’s knee)
- Sprains and strains
- Muscle tears
- Ligament injuries (like ACL or MCL sprains)
- Joint injuries
Depending on your injury, our team may also recommend physical therapy to complement your PRP injections.
Reasons to consider PRP therapy for your sports injury
You might consider PRP therapy because:
- It uses your own blood (so there’s little risk of reaction)
- It’s minimally invasive
- It requires little to no downtime
- It can delay or reduce your need for surgery
The International Spine, Pain & Performance Center makes it easy for you to receive your PRP injections. We have two — soon to be three! — convenient locations. In addition to our Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Virginia, location, we're excited to share that a new Pulaski location will open in July, making it even easier for you to access advanced treatments like PRP. Stay tuned for updates!
